The Oxford Encyclopedia of African Thought , accessed January 27, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Evans-Pritchard, Edward Evan; anthropologist; born 21 September 1902 in Sussex, England; studied modern history at the University of Oxford and anthropology at the London School of Economics; earned his doctorate (1927); was appointed at the Fuad I University (now the Egyptian University of Cairo) (1932); his seminal work, Theories of primitive religion disputed the existing theories of primitive religious practices; his trilogy of works on the Nuer (The Nuer, Nuer Religion, and Kinship and Marriage Among the Nuer) and his coedited volume African Political Systems are seen as classics of British social anthropology; in 1940 he was commissioned in the Sudan Defense Force; became a professor of social anthropology and a Fellow of All Souls College at Oxford (1946-1970); died 11 September 1973 in Oxford, England)
